The reasons are that they had an image of offering less than average quality food, Parisians don’t like eating standing up, and primarily, Paris city council never wanted to see a flock of competing businesses grabbing market shares to its brick and mortar restaurants paying high local taxes.
But this has changed.
Then came the gourmet american style food trucks. The first one managed to start operations in 2011 under the smoking name “Le camion qui fume” (the smoking truck). The new food truck craze grew ever since with over 40 in the Paris region.
Paris officials changed their mind too.
Facing the growing interest Paris city council finally decided to allocate 40 food trucks spots located in different arrondissements of Paris.
So what are those food trucks all about?
You will find two trends: The gourmet hamburger team with organic meat, hand cut fries, high end labeled French cheese and all the good products France has to offer. And then you have the world cuisine team from Vietnamese food to local French specialties like crepes and traditional French hand cooked meal in a jar.
Who are they for?
The food trucks in central Paris are primarily targeted at young French Parisian hipsters. They all have a website or a Facebook page where you can follow their location day by day, but none of them are in English which leads me to conclude that they are not too tourist aware.
This shouldn’t stop you from giving it a try. Lets say you want to take a break from French food and there happened to be a gourmet burger truck close to where you stay, or on the way to your day tour, then go for it.
Not really at $10 and higher a burger, there are cheaper options to eat in Paris.
Are they convenient?
No, scarcity of locations and popularity will create long waiting queues. About 50 minutes wait during peak hours, that sounds like very slow food to me. Most of them only have a couple of small stand up tables, so you will have to find a spot somewhere to savor.
Are the burgers good?
You can’t go too wrong with the taste, the whole concept relies on bringing to the streets fresh high quality products.
How to find them?
The best way to find these trucks for non French speakers is to use a food truck locating website named tttruck.com. Just enter Paris as a location, the day and time you want, and the site will return a Google map with the locations of the trucks for your criteria.
